How to Identify real and fake sapphire jewelry?

If you have just bought sapphire jewelry and the authenticity of the jewelry and gemstones
bothers you, or if you are about to buy sapphire jewelry and are concerned about getting the right thing – here’s a quick guide to spotting the fake from the real.
Your sapphire jewelry consists of two different materials that need to be examined individually. The sapphire jewelry is made up of metal and the sapphire.
To check the authenticity of the metal, look for the Hallmark symbol in the metal. In case of gold there are different varieties and qualities. So even if with a chlorine test you are able to verify that the metal is genuine gold, you cannot be sure if it really is 14K or 18K as claimed. Hence the best thing to do is to buy gold with the Hallmark certification.
To check the authenticity of a natural sapphire from fake or synthetic sapphire, you need to do a simple visual test. Sapphire belongs to the corundum mineral family which usually occurs with inclusions; flawless corundum is extremely rare. So check under the loop if the gem has some inclusions or if it is too good to be true. A fake or lab created sapphire looks too pure like a blue glass. Keep in mind that if your jeweler tells you that the gem is treated it does not mean that the gemstone is fake. Natural sapphires need to be heat treated to make them good for jewelry. Any treatment other than the heat treatment can be temporary and not advisable.

Some pointers I did not know about. Thank you very much. I think stones other than diamonds are often forgotten about and not checked properly.

hi there .. well all I would like to say is always be suspicious when you find a sapphire that is too clean, as in inclusions are not visible even when you see it with a loupe.

I just bought a real natural sapphire that is very dark and no visible inclusions under a loupe but 2 slightly lighter, almost spots that you have to search to find. I paid 900 from a jeweler I always use but for the first time, im worried. the stone looks to good to be true.

I just inherited a bracelet from my grandmother that she wore in the early 30's supposedly to some parties given by the Governor of the state at that time. They appear to be large light sapphire rectangles set in silver. I would say the color is closer to aquamarine than sapphire. Can you tell me if by my description of the the large stones (5) sounds like they may in fact be real.

Hi there,
The color that you mentioned could be that of sapphires and it is also possible that they are aquamarines only. So as of now let's hope that the gems are real only.
One thing that you can do at home to check if the gem is real is as I have also written in the article, check the presence of inclusions in the gemstones. Inclusions are like fine fingerprints of nature and even the best varieties of gems have them.
I would also recommend that you get your jewelry examined by a gemologist. It is always a good idea to know the actual worth of your jewelry.
For if it is real, those could be worth a fortune.

Best Wishes
Naomi

when the gemstones are heat treated, they loose their astrological effects. Then it is better to buy lab created for the ornamental use for its looks. It is well said.."All that glitters is not gold"

Here is an excellent discussion on how a New York based company The Natural Sapphire company faked asterism on $200 blue cabochon and made it $20000 star sapphire. Some unscrupulous dealers such as The Natural Sapphire Company extensive indulge in image manipulating. Its important that you buy from well reputed dealers. The Natural Sapphire Company is already facing lot of consumer ire over doctored images as well as overpricing .
