How to Identify real and fake sapphire jewelry?

If you have just bought sapphire jewelry and the authenticity of the jewelry and gemstones bothers you, or if you are about to buy sapphire jewelry and are concerned about getting the right thing – here’s a quick guide to spotting the fake from the real.

Your sapphire jewelry consists of two different materials that need to be examined individually. The sapphire jewelry is made up of metal and the sapphire.

To check the authenticity of the metal, look for the Hallmark symbol in the metal. In case of gold there are different varieties and qualities. So even if with a chlorine test you are able to verify that the metal is genuine gold, you cannot be sure if it really is 14K or 18K as claimed. Hence the best thing to do is to buy gold with the Hallmark certification.

To check the authenticity of a natural sapphire from fake or synthetic sapphire, you need to do a simple visual test. Sapphire belongs to the corundum mineral family which usually occurs with inclusions; flawless corundum is extremely rare. So check under the loop if the gem has some inclusions or if it is too good to be true. A fake or lab created sapphire looks too pure like a blue glass. Keep in mind that if your jeweler tells you that the gem is treated it does not mean that the gemstone is fake. Natural sapphires need to be heat treated to make them good for jewelry. Any treatment other than the heat treatment can be temporary and not advisable.

Some pointers I did not know about. Thank you very much. I think stones other than diamonds are often forgotten about and not checked properly.
